Please just try to provide fair warning of spoilers if you can.
Longlegs
I think this had a lot of potential to be like Silence of the Lambs or Se7en. Its atmosphere is fine, I like the cinematography and the score. But it’s mystery is never that engaging and it descends into some Conjuring bullshit towards the end.
I liked it slightly more than I did Maxxxine, but I’m just not loving most of this year’s horror movies.
Fly Me To The Moon
Kind of disappointing. It’s sometimes charming and entertaining, but not consistent enough. It’s too long for the type of film it is. It’s basically single handedly carried by Johnasson’s charisma.\
EDIT:
Also forgot to mention, because I'm looking forward to Twisters which stars Daisy Edgar Jones I decided to watch her two main movies. I saw the first episode of Normal People back when it premiered, but I realized I never actually saw Jones in anything else. And I like her a lot, which made me realize I like her primarily because she's pretty.
Where the Crawdads Sing
I was vividly aware of this film and it's release. It was a big box office hit at the time, which not a lot of people expected (I did due to the book's popularity) but not even I expected it to hit almost 100M DOM. It got a mixed critical reception but a strong audience response, and it was Jones's introduction to Hollywood. Taylor Swift also wrote a song for the credits, a song which I have listened to many times and which ended up on my Spotify wrap for both 2022 and 2023. It's one of my favorite songs from Swift, and I feel like she was robbed of an Oscar win.
The movie itself is fine. It plays like a Lifetime movie. I didn't expect it to be a Court drama with a lot of the story being played in flashbacks. There are some really gorgeous shots and Jones gives a strong performance. Harris Dickinson is also good, hamming it up here, this was also the same year he had Triangle of Sadness so quite the year for him.
Fresh
I remember the internet really liking this at the time, although it's fallen off and no on cares about it anymore. Also another strong performance from Jones, it was a fun stylish horror comedy. It really endeared me to Jones as an actress.
Both Fresh and Crawdads came out in 2022 (much like Dickinson has Crawdads and Triangle the same year) so it's interesting that 2022 was a landmark year for both of their careers.
