The Long Walk
I was looking forward to this since I really loved Lawrence’s Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. This is really good.
It’s a bit shocking to me that this is being released as an indie/arthouse film. It’s a Stephen King adaptation from a studio filmmaker (Lawrence also made Constantine). One or two decades ago this would have been a massive release and probably a box office juggernaut like Gone Girl.
It’s a deeply depressing film. The performances are all around great. David Johnson who gave an incredible performance in Alien Romulus stuns here as the heart of the film. He has great physicality, he’s probably a dancer with how much control he has over his body. Another highlight for me is Judy Greer who is heart breaking with her short screen time. Mark Hamill has been criticized here but I think his performance is good. Cooper Hoffman is good as well, not the stand out but he makes a good case for talent having some sort of genetic component.
Lawrence is able to make this look epic. It’s super tense.
Thanks for this review. I love the novel so I'll be sure to check the adaptation as well.
