Movie Monday Free Talk
So since I'm a terrible person and all that I totally forgot to make this post last week so I've decided to wait a week and actually post on a Monday. For those of you that don't know what Movie Monday is, here is the post I made about it.
Basically I'd like to make a weekly post where myself and other users post comments on what movies they've watched recently and whether or not they recommend it etc. There's no specific format set out for the reviews, so feel free to write one any way you like, whether it's just a few sentences or a whole essay, we'll figure out what works best as we go along.
So far, the only rules are:
-
All top level comments should be reviews. (if you have any questions or suggestions on how to do things differently, either send me a private message or post in the discussion thread I linked up above)
-
No spoilers in top level comments. Ideally any spoilers should be in children comments (with sufficient warning) if you wish to write a review with spoilers, make another comment below your top level comment and write the spoilers there. Anyone who doesn't want to know any spoilers should un-expand the comments at the top before they start reading comments. Hopefully this should allow discussion of both the film and the review without forcing people to see spoilers.
I know the second rule is a tiny bit confusing, but like I said this is a learning process and we'll see what happens. Anyway have fun and happy film watching!
Alright, so the film that I've chosen to do this week is 3 Idiots, one of my favorites of all time for a couple reasons I'll discuss below. A few people have said that they don't want the review in too much detail so I'll leave it fairly simple.
3 Idiots is one of the most famous Bollywood films ever made. It follows three Indian students as they struggle through Indian University. The film, as many Bollywood films are, is filled with singing, dancing, and comedy, but what makes 3 Idiots so wonderful is the serious moments in between the comedy and laughter that really bring you back and make you think about things. Watching 3 Idiots has me rolling on the floor one moment and then near to tears the next. In many ways the film accounts for life's ups and downs in a way that I've not seen very often (or at least not done as well) in many other movies.
It's quite a long film of roughly three hours, and I'd definitely recommend trying to watch it in one sitting, and quite often longer films can put me off, because they feel like a chore to watch towards the end. But every time I've watched this I've been hooked right up to the end and didn't really want it to finish. The other thing worth mentioning is that it's filled with a mix of Hindi and English so you'll need to watch it with subtitles.
If you know Bollywood isn't really your thing then I wouldn't recommend this for you, but if you've never watched any Bollywood before, please don't be put off by its reputation of being quite cheesy and frankly, a bit rubbish. This film is really very pleasurable to watch and if you commit the time to it it will take you on a wild ride throughout the magical India created by Rajkumar Hirani.
As it turns out, writing a review is much harder then I thought so I apologise if my review isn't very good :p Here is the I'm IMDB link to 3 idiots, and I'd appreciate any feedback on what to include in later reviews. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy the film :).
3 Idiots is awesome! I'm on board with your review; to me, 3 Idiots really nails the fairytale vibe that a lot of movies (Bollywood and otherwise) shoot for, and pairing that with the more serious core makes for a really great one. Looking back, it's not surprising that Hirani's next movie was PK.
This last week, I went to see Sorry to Bother You. This film was, in a word, bizarre. I had a lot of fun, and left the cinema with more than a couple questions about what I had just watched.
IMDB's synopsis nicely describes the film without giving too much away:
The key in that synopsis is the "alternate present-day". The world of this film is different than our world, but not so far off that it's unbelievable.... at first. Throughout the film, things get more and more absurd, and saying anything more would be giving too much away.
The film has a definite message. From capitalism and class warfare to the prison system and slavery, this film is very upfront with its opinions. It is far from subtle. And while it kinda beats you over the head with it, the absurdity of what I was watching kept me engaged.
Unique, hilarious, and brilliantly acted, Sorry to Bother You was one of the best films I've seen this year. It's not perfect, as I feel the ending could have been tightened up, with a few unnecessary scenes. But for a directorial debut, it was pretty awesome. And the soundtrack, all done by The Coup, has been on my Spotify since.
Overall, I'll give the film 4 stars of 5. I'd love to watch it again!
It's so strange to me that you didn't like the Truman Show. I'll be honest I don't really like Jim Carrey, he was good in The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but other than that most of his films haven't really appealed to me. But the thing about the Truman Show is: I don't think it was meant to be funny. I mean sure, it has plenty of comedic moments, but at its heart it raises an ethical question that we can see still needs to be addressed 20 years later. And whilst it had plenty of not really plot holes, but things that didn't really make too much sense (the rain in the beginning for one), the movie was written in a way that made you fall in love with Truman, despite how weird he can be. I think it's all the rest of the film that makes the last scene as good as it is. I don't mean to try and change your opinion on the film, but to me I really loved the film and would probably give it a rating of 4.2/5
