Of course Bond should be male. To make him female would be like rebooting Kill Bill with a male protagonist. Completely unnecessary, and insignificant on its own.

One supports the norm and the expectation, the other goes against it.

I agree that a male-to-female retcon is definitely more accepted. I was just pointing out that simply changing the protagonist's gender(and disregarding the consequent smaller changes) is not enough to justify making a reboot. For example, I would rather see Harry Potter: Auror Extraordinaire than Jane Potter and the Philosopher's stone.

I loved Atomic Blonde, and one of the things that shocked me during and pleased me on consideration was how brutal it was. Some action movies play with female fighters as light, ethereal creatures dodging and flitting through the crowd. Atomic Blonde did not. The protagonist was a heavy hitter, giving as good as she got and suffering for it. It was eye-opening for me and helped me see how gendered my vision of what hand to hand combat should look like in a movie.

I find action movies boring, but this sort of thing is even more boring. And not because there will be a backlash, but beacuse it's completely ridiculous. It's because it (edit:) resembles shows the bad side of feminism: turning the totally valid (and still necessary) struggle for equality into a mob war for conquest. Everything is politicised. Made lame. In the end, nothing is gained, but lots of credibility and sympathy is lost.

My belief is that we're approaching (or have approached) a time where a new goalpost needs to be set for the struggle for equality and freedom, deprecating some of the ideals, aims, and terms that are widespread currently. They are worn out, and some that have become unnecessary in the current day and age. This sort of cringy and boring trend of making traditionally male fictional characters into female ones is one such thing. It means nothing, especially when the majority of women in the world are still living in traditional patriarchal societies, and in majority of the countries non-heteronormativity problematic.
