I loved this movie so much as a teen growing up, and it always surprised me how many people didn't seem to get that the movie essentially was entirely from Tom's perspective, and how that perspective was flawed (it starts out with a narration explaining that in very clear terms).
It also made me listen to The Smiths, Wolfmother, Regina Spektor, and Simon & Garfunkel. I don't know how good or bad you'd consider that but I'm still very thankful for it.

I feel like this video essay creator could use a bit of work on polishing and tightening up his presentation, (e.g. it was a 10 minute video that could have easily been condensed in to 7 minutes if not for his slow paced speaking with overly long pauses in between each line), but it was still pretty good overall. I didn't really enjoy 500 Days of Summer when I first saw it years ago, and the perspective gained from this video likely wouldn't change that for me, but I definitely do agree that of all the Manic Pixie Dream Girl (and guy) portrayals, at least it was more nuanced in this movie than most others.

But those are mostly things that can be learned through trial and error.
The pacing I found to be less of a problem, although the lines could be spoken somewhat quicker with better enunciation. It feels like they're trying to do what Every Frame a Painting did or what FilmJoy/Movies with Mikey is doing, but they're not quite there yet. The pauses are empty, where EFaP usually place a movie tidbit to punctuate the previous point or use it for comedic effect. As for the pace of the delivery: it is somewhere in between. Not quite the slow, rhythmic vocal-fry delivery of Mickey nor the sharp, one-two punches of EFaP.

And I also agree that the pacing probably wouldn't have felt like such a problem if they had edited the video to have something worth watching going on in the background during the pauses.

I never thought that... but in fact the opposite. I thought Tom came off as extremely unlikable and a bit of a shallow, narcissistic prick, which is largely why I didn't enjoy the movie.
