I've read the Three Body Problem trilogy. You need some stamina (book 2 is longer than the first and the 3rd is longer still) and tolerance for an ensemble cast of characters (the books span multiple generations), but I think the Clarke comparison is apt.

What struck me (as the posted article also mentions) was the global scale, the believable (and thus, interesting) political and social processes that would go along with trying to do massive things together as a whole species, and how and when that falls apart.

It's not just cool tech and exciting space battles (although these are certainly part of the books!), but an explorating of what humanity might be capable of, and how we might go about massive and open-ended creative projects.

There's way less emphasis on individual heroes that save the day and control events than in the (Western) fiction we're used to. It really broadened my view of things.
