The article is an interesting retelling of the history of MoviePass but can easily be boiled down to a single sentence:

They sold their product at a loss and hoped to make it up by selling user data or forcing theaters to cut deals with them, which never happened.

I was a subscriber to MoviePass back when it cost $35 per month. I still saw 3-5 movies per month with it so even at the higher price I was still coming out ahead. There was one time when I had an issue and I called them while standing outside of the theater, talked to a real live human who fixed the problem in less than a minute and got everything working again.

When they dropped it to $10 per month, I tried calling the number back when I had an issue and got voice message telling me to email them before they disconnected the call. Their service people were both terrible and overwhelmed by the success. There were multiple trips to the movie theater that ended with my wife and I going home because the app simply wouldn't work.

But hey, I still saw $500 worth of movies for less than $100.

I regret not buying Helios and Matheson's insanely overpriced put options, simply for bragging rights.
