I came across this while searching for something completely unrelated and found the subject interesting. I'm a bit of a fan of DuVernay and I can completely see where she is coming from, but I was wondering what everyone else thought. Is the writing on the wall for the traditional theater distribution model? Is the Academy of Performing Arts going to implode?

One of the reasons why I find this topic interesting is because these arguments are reflective of what I keep thinking about whenever I hear people on Reddit and elsewhere talking about Netflix and how it doesn't have the content they want. But to me, Netflix is great specifically because of that; they aren't just buying the rights to expensive TV shows you already know are great, they are providing you with content which you would not have exposure to otherwise. Movies like 13th and I Am Mother would never show up in the modern major cinema chains, and if it were on a service like Hulu or the upcoming Disney Plus where it is surrounded with highly marketed and familiar programming, I wouldn't be motivated to watch them. And yet Netflix actively promotes those kinds of films with it's recommendation system.
