I watch this at least 2-3 time a year. There's something about the causal relaxed setting and a perfect rendition of a difficult song that just works so well. Mike is amazing but Jeff's harmonies is on-fucking-point too. Also I love checking the YT comments every time because it's just people coming back again and again.
You nailed it. The harmonies are what caught my ear. They add a lot of punch to the song.
The chorus harmonies are crucial to this song for me. I can't imagine a cover of Africa that doesn't have those harmonies working unless you massively changed the whole vibe of the song.
Oh man, you weren't kidding about the harmonies. These guys are so tight. I've seen a lot of live performances suffer because of weak backup vocals. Usually bands who have lots of multi-tracked harmonies from the lead singer, but no strong singers beside the lead. I think a lot of bands underestimate the importance of strong backup singers.
Ditto, and agreed. And he/they have so many other amazing coversongs too! My other favorites are The Sound of Silence, Linger, Rocket Man, Mad World, Paranoid Android, Space Oddity, and Dust in the Wind. But TBH, I haven't heard a cover of theirs yet I haven't thoroughly enjoyed. I was even originally considering posting the 'Best of' compilation, which I rewatch in its entirety quite often, but decided against it since I figured an individual song would probably be more accessible.
I'm mainlining their whole channel right now and they are phenomenal. Thank you for posting this!
NP, glad you're enjoying it. :)
