I'm a new fan. This video made that happen.
Short weeks ago I wouldn't have described myself as a fan. I happened upon his music a few weeks ago, and while I noticed that his lyrics and rhythm was unique and deeper than the usually fair I listen to, I guess I was still too new to this style of music. It's not hiphop, it's certainly not classical. Half way between spoken word and acoustic singer songwriting? I'm not sure. Maybe I would describe his music as Ballards.
Usually when people say "I'm not a fan" it means they don't like something. But for me it was simply that I'm not sure what genre his music falls into and I don't know what new works will sound like, so it sounds disingenuine to say I am a follower of his upcoming musical endeavours. His songs are not really hum-able, there are no easy refrains where one repeats stuff, they demand not to be played in the background and are also a challenge to sing in the car. What is it.
With this one, and thinking back especially to The Tale of Jenny / Violet / Screech, I think I've mentally settled on a genre for Ren, and thus i can truthfully say I am a fan.
Man I'm so far down the Ren rabbithole it's almost embarrassing. I prefer his acoustic stuff ( Bardcore!) to his rap but that's mostly just because I'm an old white guy. Just a ridiculously...

Just a ridiculously talented musician and singer and a heartbreaking backstory.
The cynical part of me knows he will eventually be exposed as an AI developed by some top secret YouTube marketing team, but for now I'm just going to ride the rollercoaster.
