I love Lain, but personally I think the OP single-handedly elevates the show to something greater. It sets the tone so well? I have no idea why the combination of this song + the nostalgic retro-futuristic VHS+CRT monitor aesthetic works so well, but it just does. Plus, the editing? All the cuts and fades and effects... they're so masterfully arranged. Not to mention the way they choose to contrast Lain both off-Wired (small/lonely/innocent) and on-Wired (cunning/manipulative/commanding)... it's really striking. Gosh, plus all the imagery (crows, wind, time freezing) is so cold and lonely and gorgeous.
I especially love the guitar tone of this song? The little two-note chiming "ding dong" motif that repeats in the middle of the verses... it sounds so good? Not to mention the spiraling solo midway through the song, layered with more two-tone riffs (DOO dooooo... doooOOOOoo doooooooo......). It feels so sighing and wistful? I adore how the OP chooses chop the song up and rearrange it, ending on the solo + pairing it with the visuals of off-Wired Lain walking away on the bridge, then on-Wired Lain throwing her head back and disintegrating into the aether. It's so magical to me.
The OP on its own is an 11/10 for me, even if the show itself is an 8 or 9/10? I would watch the OP on repeat, over and over and over.
Side note: I much prefer watching a VHS recording of the OP, as opposed to the cleaned-up 60fps HD version you've linked. It feels like it suits the atmosphere a lot better? Plus, who could forget PRESENT DAY. PRESENT TIME!!

Completely different genre of music, but it hits me in a similar place, so I thought I'd share. :)
Here's where you know this from.
Nostalgia will be the death of me.

I've watched Lain probably over a dozen times at this point, and let me tell you that seeing it in such crystal clear HD is so unnerving. Amazing.
I, in fact, watched Lain on VHS. It was magical.
I love this song. I actually only watch serial experimental lain last year, and I enjoyed the headyness and early 00s aesthetics.
