Like Too Many Zooz, Moon Hooch are also from Brooklyn, and have also had a few somewhat viral subway busking videos over the years (E.g.). But unlike TMZ, Moon Hooch have appeared on NPR Tiny Desk. However, my personal favorite Moon Hooch performance is from Jam In The Van: Number 9, Tubes, Number 2

Moon Hooch and TMZ have also busked together a few times though. E.g. And Moon Hooch's Michael Wilbur has collaborated with TMZ's Leo P a bunch of times over the years too. E.g.

p.s. FWS is my favorite track of TMZ's too, but I prefer the busking recording of it because Leo P's dancing is always super entertaining. Speaking of which, have you seen his performance at the BBC Proms? It's bloody amazing!

It's funny you mention that Too Many Zooz busking link. It's likely that video was my first exposure to TMZ and almost certainly FWS. But, as someone who has never had the courage to preform publicly like this, I often remember it for another reason. At the the end of To the Top (around 3:25), a couple of crowd members in Santa outfits dance close to the money bucket and Matt quickly guides them away. Leo and David clearly change to vigilant positions. From everyone's reactions it was harmless but it's a clear reminder that busking requires more than just setting up and playing.

The other clips were all new to me. Moon Hooch tiny desk was probably my favorite - the features on Number 9 were lovely and I preferred them a bit to the jam in the van version. I understand the drum work gets the focus but the sax wail and spotlight immediately after is worth the price of admission. Leo working the Charles Mingus tribute also deserves a mention. I hardly have the experience to judge but his ability to move while hammering the notes home never ceases to impress

Appreciate all the clips. Looking forward to a new Too Many Zooz album in March. Cave music as u/drannex put it is a genre I passively enjoy and I'm ready for another phase

Glad you enjoyed the videos. :) And yeah I imagine busking is scary, not just because performing to a crowd like that takes courage, but also due to the risk of getting robbed or even assaulted (which I've seen happen in a few videos). And ditto, I'm looking forward to their new album too.

p.s. Cave music is just what Moon Hooch refers to their music as, but TBH it's never really caught on, and so most people still just lump them in with Nu Jazz or Jazz Fusion. TMZ calls theirs brasshouse though (which has caught on a bit more, with music journalists, and a few other similar bands referring to their music as such), since it's more house/electronic music inspired.

Speaking of which if you want another brasshouse band to check out, MEUTE is one you might also enjoy. Although they call themselves a techno marching band. :P

And Leo P is also in another band with Grace Kelly called 2SAXY that is pretty awesome too.

Appreciate that context, I remember the Brass House label from previous forays down this rabbit hole. I have some edm background and I find the defining process of sub/micro genres fascinating I'm...

I'm a little familiar with Meute already. My favorite item from them is probaby this live cover of Missy Elliot -
            Sock It 2 Me

Maybe getting away from the theme a bit but I also like No BS! Brass Band, particularly this version of 3am bounce

Moon Hooch is perhaps one of my favorite groups. I prefer them over TMZ (although they are great as well), but I believe MH were the first ones to really popularize this new style of playing Sax, as well as their use of traffic cones, albeit not as known as TMZ has been.

They call this style of music "cave music" and I love their 2014 album that is affectionately named "This is Cave Music" and their follow up "Red Sky". Check them out, they're pretty great.
