Pertinent to this topic, Ethel Cain expanding on her initial, evidently viral, post.

I figured folks on Tildes would have a lot to say about this topic! How long have you been on music based forums? Have you found the discussion to have gotten better or worse?

I frequented music subreddits between 2016 and 2023. Each subreddit had an acceptable ratio of shitposts to high quality content. People would share deep dives into the influences behind an album, their personal connection to a specific song, or even something completely unrelated to an artist but the community would appreciate. I enjoyed hearing from people with better media literacy dissecting music and sharing thoughts I never would have had on my own.

Those same subreddits have become slop generators. I'm not sure if there was a downward trend that made those people stop posting, or if most of them left as part of an exodus. I realized I was consuming the same unoriginal jokes every day and I stopped visiting too.

Like Fantano said, it takes more effort to process a more thoughtful comment. It takes more effort to engage with the art you enjoy at a higher level. It's easier to get addicted to infinite volume, low quality content.

It's a problem every online community will eventually face as its population grows. The noise becomes too loud. You get regulars regurgitating in-jokes, drive-by pedantic assassins fomenting arguments over semantics, and bots. I think reddit's profit motive accelerated this trend but isn't a hard requirement, HackerNews has a similar problem.

Do you know if Hacker News posts traffic and poster numbers anywhere? My personal theory for HN quality dropping as of late is mostly due to the fact that the entire tech industry has evolved into ponzi schemes, scams, and enshittification. The only people left are MBAs and folks with no morals.
