"Killing in the Name" has been described as "a howling, expletive-driven tirade against the ills of American society."

This is one of the best descriptions of the song I've ever heard.

I'm not an angry guy, generally, but there's something about music by people who are intensely angry that speaks to me on a basic level, and one of the best examples of this is Rage Against the Machine. Zach de la Rocha's vocals coupled with the absolutely killer riffs from Tom Morello and Tim Commerford make RATM one of the must-listen bands of the 90s in my opinion.

Heck, Tom Morellos is just one of the best musicians of the past 40 years. Several of the best guitar solos of all time were done by him (though not on this particular song).

If you're angry about the establishment, give it a listen. Or not. Fuck you I won't do what you tell me.

Darkness from The Crow soundtrack is another good song of theirs, that you don't hear about often. They also got me reading Chomsky believe it or not. They had a website up in the early days of the internet and would talk about him on there.

Darkness is a fantastic track as well. It has some really noteworthy "RATM-isms":

      • a bright, jazzy feel at times
      • very technical (and oh so tasty) riffs from Morello
      • guitar work that pushes the idea of what a guitar solo is

I could go on, but I feel like I'm moving into pretentious music nerd territory here. Great track that you've selected; that whole album, actually, is fantastic.

Ha, awesome! Glad to hear they inspired other readers, and I’m not much of a music nerd, but I think you’re spot on with the review :) Yea, you’re right, that entire album is fantastic. I know...

Yea, you’re right, that entire album is fantastic. I know it’s one of the more popular songs on there, but I could listen to Big Empty by STP all day.
