Dead American - The Shape of Punk is Dumb (2019)
Debut EP from new post hardcore outfit Dead American. The band is notable for being fronted by Cove Reber, former front man of Saosin for a time. Reber was fired from the band after two LPs and both he and Saosin went away for a long time. He's back fronting Dead American and arguably has never sounded better. Most notably, his uncleans are much improved, even if he employs them sparingly.
The sound is very much from the heyday of 00s post hardcore. For fans of Finch, Saosin, Circa Survive and early Coheed and Cambria.
The name of the album seems to be a nod to The Shape of Punk to Come by Refused? Probably is, considering the genre. I have to give this a listen.
Edit. Oh it most certainly is. The album cover is almost identical.
Digging one step further, that album title is a reference to Ornette Coleman's seminal free-jazz album The Shape of Jazz to Come, (and you could even go back to HG Wells with it)
Nice find. I am not overly familiar with the Refused, but I feel like I should be considering how often I see them referenced on other music forums I hang out on.
I listened to the album non-stop twenty years ago when it came out. You should really give it a listen. It's a classic, and somehow still sounds fresh.
Oh my. This shit slaps. Thank you for finally getting me to listen to these guys.
I keep coming back to it too. There's so much great stuff that came out with it on Friday (Coheed, Fucked Up, Ice Nine Kills, Cursive), but I just keep spinning this bad boy.
