I don't see what could really be called "metal" about this. Not that that's a good or bad thing, I just don't see any connection to metal other than it being moderately abrasive. Much like scarlxrd (I don't really think "heart attack" has been topped in this lane yet), it's essentially just a (slightly outdated by now?) flavor of internet trap with a bit of distorted industrial flair and taking 2000s post-hardcore vocals and fitting it onto those beats.
Anyway, I kinda like it as far as teenage angst music goes, which isn't that far for me. Thing is, there isn't much to it beyond that aesthetic still being a bit of a novelty...though there's always room for growth. I'd like to see a more developed version of this stuff come up at some point.
Meh. I generally prefer more symphonic/operatic metal e.g. SOAD, Linkin Park, Tengger Cavalry, etc. since at least that takes some actual instrumental talent and vocal skill. Just growling or...
what are your thoughts?
Meh. I generally prefer more symphonic/operatic metal e.g. SOAD, Linkin Park, Tengger Cavalry, etc. since at least that takes some actual instrumental talent and vocal skill. Just growling or straight screaming at the top of your lungs and/or rapping to insanely simplistic and incredibly inane lyrics over mediocre beats... I just don't get the appeal. Maybe it's the old man in me, but I like metal because it makes me angry and energizes me and this does neither... it honestly just makes me cringe pretty hard. And if you are going to just growl/scream and rap with simplistic lyrics... at least give it a solid sociopolitical message and have a killer band backing you up so it can hit the audience on an emotional level. To each their own though. :)
A bit of a tangent, I was going to argue about the instrumental talent and vocal skills that go into a lot of bands driven by growling and screaming (and the lyricism of Zack de la Rocha, for that...
A bit of a tangent, I was going to argue about the instrumental talent and vocal skills that go into a lot of bands driven by growling and screaming (and the lyricism of Zack de la Rocha, for that matter!), but instead I'll just throw in that if you want things that outwardly show off technical skill and (sometimes tasteless) ambition, I'd look more in the prog metal direction rather than the early 2000s nu / alt metal stuff which is honestly on the simplistic side, to the point where it's kinda confusing to talk up their instrumental skill. maudlin of the Well and Voivod might be worth checking out, or even Symphony X for the REALLY overblown silly showoff shit.
LOL, I didn't say a lot of instrumental talent, nor do I feel I "talk[ed] them up" to any great extent (although I do think Serj Tankian is one of the greatest metal vocalists of all time, and...

LOL, I didn't say a lot of instrumental talent, nor do I feel I "talk[ed] them up" to any great extent (although I do think Serj Tankian is one of the greatest metal vocalists of all time, and while Mike Shinoda is a mediocre rapper/lyricist, he is a phenomenal producer)... but at least there is some instrumental talent and vocal skills there (unlike with Lucifena here, which shows very little, IMO).
As for exemplary examples of instrumental talent/vocal skill in metal of the silly showoff variety, I personally tend to think more of bands like Dragonforce, Tenacious D, Buckethead and Coheed & Cambria, rather than anything early 2000s mainstream hard rock / nu / alt metal. Mostly I like that era of nu/alt metal for the nostalgia, energy it gives me and angst/anger it makes me feel! 🤘 :P
Regardless, yes, recommendations are always welcome! ... and I will be sure to check out Maudlin of the Well (sick band name!), Voivod and Symphony X. :)
edit: Symphony X and Voivod are pretty rad so far... Maudlin is a bit weird and over the top for my taste though (weirdly reminds me of GWAR a bit).

If my recs are unwelcome, please ignore :)
