Fike reportedly signed a 3-4 million dollar deal with Columbia Records without ever putting out an album. The buzz around him will continue to grow and he is going to be everywhere going into 2020. I think his career arc is going to be similar to the likes of Billie Eillish or Kahlid. Definitely someone to keep an eye on.

A friend sent me single some weeks ago, and everything I've heard since cements him further as total middle ground. Its clueless, catchy but clueless. His vocal performance is so dull I'd be surprised he didn't spend his whole life sharpening it to a blunt edge, no character and nothing to say.

He seems to be blowing up around Brockhampton, despite appearing from thin air, and no doubt that scene is a ticking tomb bomb, at the whim of whichever hip executive holds the button.

p.s. I really liked King of Everything.

I agree with both of you. The music is catchy but unchallenging. But is that really a bad thing? He has the aesthetic and the sound to make it big. Is he going to revolutionize the music industry?...

Yeah, definitely. Don't get me wrong, I love, love, love edgy, angry, challenging music... but I am not above enjoying chill, catchy, mellow and unchallenging stuff either. It's a bit weird and may seem contradictory, but two of my favorite bands are SOAD and Death Cab For Cutie. :P

I would never criticze music for 'not being challenging enough'. Some of the most beautiful music is the most universal. But what is any art if it doesn't have anything to say? I think that's my point. If an artist wants to create something thats fun and easy, then thats a statement, and their passion will shine through.

If there's nothing fresh, why hear it over anything else? Alternative acoustic R&B is a popular flavour at the moment. Compare Fike against Frank Ocean. Similar sounds and direction, but Ocean had something to say: just the album art of 'Blonde' is a statement - a directionless generation lost in the technology that birthed it. And what an easy listen it is too.

Who knows, maybe Fike has it in him, I love to see an artist grow. One to follow, like you say.
