Some context for the unfamiliar, which undoubtedly improves this song:

Laura Jane Grace is the trans frontwoman for Against Me!. Prior to being out, she had a habit of writing about her feelings regarding her gender identity in the closers to her band's albums.

The final track on their 2005 album, "Searching for a Former Clarity," mentions "childhood secrets of dressing up in women's clothes."

The final track on their 2007 album, "The Ocean," says "if I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman." It goes on to beautifully add, "my mother once told me she would have named me Laura," which is a line that can still bring tears to my eyes.

The final track on their 2010 album is "Bamboo Bones," which is the track linked here. This was the last track on the last album released before Grace's transition. It feels like a sendoff that she wrote for herself, knowing what she was about to embark on.

Though I am not trans myself, I still find the track powerfully inspiring, especially because I had followed the band from their earlier days and got to experience this track as a sort of opening of the closet doors, behind which she'd been speaking to us for years. It captures a conviction and drive that I find admirable. It's a meaningful trans pride anthem, and probably my favorite track by them. "What God doesn't give to you / you've got to go and get for yourself" is such a compelling, resonant line.
