You can learn to play by yourself, however; there are many more well-designed resources for self-learning than there have been in the past. If you want a very simple instrument you can try the Ukelele; it's basically a simplified guitar and they are very cheap.
Alternatively you can just pick up a book on music theory and study music on your own, but keep in mind that most of those books will assume you know the basics of western music already, which is precisely why it's good to learn to play an instrument first.
