What have you been listening to this week? You don't need to do a 6000 word review if you don't want to, but please write something! If you've just picked up some music, please update on that as well, we'd love to see your hauls :)

My dive into Bandcamp has been simultaneously wonderful and debilitating. My bookmark folder for albums to listen to now has probably 100+ links in it, and my bookmark folder for stuff I plan to buy keeps growing by the day. In the past I've made the mistake of overcommitting to music and underappreciating it, so I'm trying to let my library grow slowly, which is easier to do when I'm paying individually for albums, as things get expensive quick should I let myself go!

Here's some of what has caught my ear this past week, among the other albums I've mentioned in past weeks which are still in rotation:

I've really been trying to dig more into jazz. I have listened to artists such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, etc. but I feel as if I wasn't able to full appreciate it. I have been listening to some more accessible entries for me and have had Gregory Porters album Liquid Spirit on repeat as well as Valentine from Bill Frisell. The fantastic blogs on Qobuz have helped guide me in the right direction.

Currently in bed listening to 5/8/77 Grateful Dead.

Try this Norma Winstone album, it's a bit edgy but still has that nice classic songwriting : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCVZjsbGRko&t=275s

It's kinda old, but for some reason I've been really digging Pras's Ghetto Superstar. I guess that nostalgia is my jam these days.

Curious if you know anything that's similar?

Not really, the closer that comes to mind is Music for 18 Musicians from Steve Reich, but not so similar. Maybe some Murcof.

A lot of Behemoth - The Satanist, it's considered one of the best metal album of the 2010's and I can definitively see why now. These albums are a bit hard to get into because they are overwhelming at first, but I actually love the density, it's nice to listen to something you can't digest in a few days:

I've made a 491 (at the time of writing) song playlist of edm on Spotify, (link here if interested, and if it's allowed) that I leave on shuffle while I'm at work, and every once and a while I'll go through and find a new batch of songs to it, so the pool of what it shuffles gets larger, and so I don't listen to the same group of songs the whole time. If you want a good run down of what I've really been listening to recently, sort by recently added, and start from the top. That being said though, there are a few somewhat recent releases I've been playing from it kind of more often.

The first is the Danny L Harle and Lil Texas song Dreaming that released within the last week or so. I'm not too familiar with Lil Texas or Danny L Harle's work, so I can't really compare it to their previous stuff, but I really like what the two have done with this track. Also because of this track, I found "Danny L Harle's HUGE PLAYLIST", also on Spotify, and there's a decent amount of trance and house-ish stuff that I had to have on my playlist that's good.

Another song I want to shout out that I like is FARAWAY199X/TAPE 2 by six impala. I think this song was on the Hyperpop Playlist back when it was 1000 gecs controlled, but this song also bops pretty hard. The album it comes off of, RUBBER, is a pretty decent concept album as well, and one of their other albums, RUBBER ALT, is kind of an interesting take on a remix/alternate version of what this album is as well.

Finally, the other somewhat recent release I wanna talk about is the new Disclosure album, ENERGY. While the full album dropped the 28th, enough singles from the album have been out for a while (and in turn, made it to my playlist) that I can at least recommend some of my favorite songs so far from it. My High, Douha, Ecstasy, Tondo, Get Close, and Expressing What Matters are some of the best bops from this thing. The rest of the album's pretty alright, I think I'll definitely have to give it another listen or two before letting it fully grow on me, but I like it so far.

Some Bloodywood too. They were going to play at a festuval I was going to go this year, but then 2020 happened.

For good measure I threw some Hair Metal into the mix and listened to the Hair Metal Essentials playlist on Apple Music.

Finally, a few playthroughs of the soundtrack to both Mamma Mia movies, because they're fuckign fantastic
