Despite the design direction being a bit uglier, I am so fucking pumped about the Sonemic chart builder making its way to rym and all of the additional tweaks and budding features all over the place.
Of particular interest to non rym users is the new releases page, which previously existed in a limited and clunky way that only benefitted users with filled out accounts. When we used to do the weekly release threads on Tildes, we had to compile multiple charts of new releases and do a ton of work because there simply was no comprehensive way to look at everything coming out. RYM always could've done this, as it's already the most complete and well organized music database, but there was previously no real way to just look at new releases in a way that would be helpful. Overnight it's completely filled that space. Rejoice!
They do, but I'd say it's one of the more useless parts of the site. RYM is very much about human curation and connections, there's a bunch of better options for algorithmic recs. The best you...

The best you could get is the pretty good compatibility feature, which will tell you which users on the site are most like you. Then you can look at the highest users and check their ratings, lists, or straight up talk to them. rymers love making connections and you can hit anyone who looks interesting up anytime.
Cool! I need some time to see how I like this, because right now I am definitely still in the "why change thing that work and I like" phase. And yeah it's so slow right now, so it's hard to test...

I had an RYM account a long time ago (edit: holy shit where did the time go that was fifteen years ago), and while I've fallen away from using the site, I still wish them the best. They have a great userbase and dataset. I still occasionally utilize the chart features for music discovery, so I very much welcome the new additions and enhancements there.
Given how much time and effort has gone into rolling out Sonemic, Glitchwave, and Cinemos, I wouldn't wish any more work on them, but I do really wish they had built an arm for books. LibraryThing comes close to what I would want from them, but I think they would do it better, and I would love for an in-network option for books alongside their offers for music, movies, and games. That would honestly probably be the thing to get me to sign back on and invest in the platform again.

Does RYM do algorithmic music recommendations based on your ratings? As in "other people with similar tastes to you also like _____"?

The new releases tab looks amazing already!
