Sergey Lyapunov (1859–1924) was a Russian pianist and composer in the generation immediately following The Five (a group including Rimsky-Korsakov and Mussorgsky).

These études are a completion of Franz Liszt's Transcendental Études. When he was young, Liszt intended to write 48 études, two in each major and minor key; he wrote 12 (C major, A minor, F major, …, B♭ minor) and refined them throughout his life. Lyapunov's set contains études in the remaining (sharp) keys, and the final E minor one is named "Elégie en Mémoire de François Liszt".

This first étude is a little different from the rest of the set, but I think it's simply gorgeous and stands on its own.
