I loved The Monkees growing up, of course not in their original syndication but the re-runs on MTV. They set a formula that is still present today. When Hannah Montana was popular, my niece who was a huge HM fan, I'd relate to her by saying The Monkees were basically the Hannah Montana of the time, rock stars who just played rock stars on TV but then became real life rock stars. I could be wrong though since I never watched HM but I suspect this formula's happened elsewhere. Didn't the same happen with The Partridge Family?
To be fair, Miley Cyrus was probably destined for stardom regardless, since her father is Billy Ray Cyrus, after all. But I think your comparing the two shows is still pretty apt. The Monkees...
To be fair, Miley Cyrus was probably destined for stardom regardless, since her father is Billy Ray Cyrus, after all. But I think your comparing the two shows is still pretty apt. The Monkees ('66-68) were definitely what kicked off that whole musician focused genre of sitcoms.
p.s. I used to watch The Monkees growing up too, but as late night reruns on MuchMusic (Canada's verion of MTV). ;)
