Some question whether China should eliminate the criminal offence, which has been used to jail dissidents and activists

The companion piece, contains this fun quote

“It is one of the most frequently used tools to target human rights activists and dissidents. It’s very convenient for the authorities. The Chinese government has intensified its crackdown on human rights and society. There is no sign that this trend will be reversed,” Teng said.

“Even if the charge is removed, the use of arbitrary detention in China will still be rampant.”

call it inciting unrest or national security or making trouble or whatever, it's just exactly the same thing thats always been used by the ultra powerful to get rid of whatever they don't like without having justification. Been there since one of our heroes, Yue Fei, was killed in 1142:

When confronted by Han Shizhong on what crime Yue had committed, Qin Hui replied, "Though it isn't sure whether there is something that he did to betray the dynasty, maybe there is." The phrase "perhaps there is", "no reason needed", "groundless", or "baseless" (Chinese: 莫須有; pinyin: mò xū yǒu) has entered the Chinese language as a proverb to refer to fabricated charges,[53] which also means 'trumped-up charge', 'setup', 'frameup', or 'concocted charge' in English.

Expect the local official to take a fall now that this is world news. Not because they care about the abuse of authority, or any wrong doing, but because it makes them look bad.

In 2014, Huang built a floating bridge over a river in his village that had no other road bridges. He built the bridge at his own expense and charged people to cross.

Wait. How could a bridge "ease traffic" if without it there was no way for the traffic to access the village? If anything isn't he achieving the opposite by allowing a high volume of traffic to take some bypass through the village, overwhelming local roads?

My understanding, (possibly mistaken) was that it was village inhabitants who were forced to take long detours to a ford for local use.
