If this goes through, it seems like the most positive outcome we can hope for at the moment. Maybe it will even help dial down tensions. Despite Biden's tendency to put his foot in his mouth, he has repeatedly demonstrated his administration is quietly effective.

Even if the entire international community decided to sanction Israel, there will always be Israelis calling for retribution after Hamas' attack on October 7th. This is doubly true as long as Hamas holds hostages. I'm not hopeful for any peaceful outcomes as long as Bibi is in power, but I'm hopeful that this won't turn into a broad regional conflict.

Israel and Hamas agreed early Wednesday to a hostage release deal that will involve a four-day pause in fighting — the first cessation since Israel launched an air and ground assault on the Gaza Strip after Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack. At least 50 women and children among the estimated 240 people held hostage in Gaza will be released over that period, the Israeli government said in a statement. Hamas said on Telegram that the deal includes the release of 150 Palestinian women and teenagers from Israeli prisons, as well as “intensifying the entry of trucks for humanitarian, relief, medical and fuel aid into all areas of the Gaza Strip.” Qatar, which has been mediating the talks, confirmed the deal for a “humanitarian pause,” adding that the starting time of the pause will be announced within the next 24 hours.

I think a lot of people who have been passionate about the suffering of the Palestinian people should take this as a victory. Hopefully the pressure for peace continues and we get something more long term.
