Comment on The McDonald's theory of why everyone thinks the economy sucks in ~finance
shusaku In this sub stack post, Nate Silver takes on the topic of inflation, framed by a recent viral story about McDonalds. I’ve been skeptical about the “greed-flation” angle going around, but I think...Inflation — the price of a fixed basket of goods — increased a lot during this period: by 16 percent. But consumption increased by considerably more than that: by 25 percent. That’s right. From December 2020 through June 2023, Americans’ financial outlays increased by 25 percent. It’s not just that the fixed basket of goods was getting more expensive — they’re also putting more in their baskets.
In this sub stack post, Nate Silver takes on the topic of inflation, framed by a recent viral story about McDonalds. I’ve been skeptical about the “greed-flation” angle going around, but I think this post makes a compelling argument about how companies are squeezing more and more out of customers.

Thank you for clarifying this. I did not get from your first post that you specifically were referring to Barrera. But now I understand that you spotted something deeper on her comments and wanted to bring that up. I appreciate your follow up.

Comment on Israel and Hamas reach tentative US-brokered deal to pause conflict, free dozens of hostages in ~news
shusaku It seems like it has gone through: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/11/22/israel-hamas-war-news-hostages-gaza-palestine/?itid=hp-mv-top-stories_top-table-high_p002_f001 I think a lot of...It seems like it has gone through:
Israel and Hamas agreed early Wednesday to a hostage release deal that will involve a four-day pause in fighting — the first cessation since Israel launched an air and ground assault on the Gaza Strip after Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack. At least 50 women and children among the estimated 240 people held hostage in Gaza will be released over that period, the Israeli government said in a statement. Hamas said on Telegram that the deal includes the release of 150 Palestinian women and teenagers from Israeli prisons, as well as “intensifying the entry of trucks for humanitarian, relief, medical and fuel aid into all areas of the Gaza Strip.” Qatar, which has been mediating the talks, confirmed the deal for a “humanitarian pause,” adding that the starting time of the pause will be announced within the next 24 hours.
I think a lot of people who have been passionate about the suffering of the Palestinian people should take this as a victory. Hopefully the pressure for peace continues and we get something more long term.

I feel like this is chum for the crowd that believes a certain crowd controls the media, isn't it?
I’m not a fan of comments like this, you should try to avoid making harmful statements while hiding behind “well other people are saying this, not me”. Unfortunately, we’re all exposed to these kind of ideas, so we can’t help but think of stereotypes. We try to recover by telling ourselves “I’m sure other people are thinking that”. But the best thing is just to discard it, and try to get it out of the discourse.

The US government is an adversarial system: the code of ethics is the rope that congress should use for hanging.

But so far this team just is very solid, and should compete all season. I’m happy with the emergence of Poitras which will solve our lack of centers after Bergeron and Krejci retired. And the offseason moves seem reasonable. I’m especially happy with JVR who has a real knack for the puck.

The question he’s asked is why watch it on their screen instead of waiting for the Apple TV release.
Honestly there isn’t any meat on the bone with this story. Probably paramount is pushing back on these theaters because they are enforcing the contract, not because someone has strong opinions on an intermission. The other quote from Schoonmaker is pretty letter of the law-y “That’s a violation so I have to find out about it”.
The history of philosophy podcast also covers this : https://www.historyofphilosophy.net/zera-yacob
(And the next two episodes)
As the author describes earlier, there’s probably too much at stake to simply do that. We’re talking about a hugely influential text in terms of linguistics, history, national pride, etc. If it is a forgery of course we can still engage and respect it, but if it isn’t then it’s just way more useful.
