From a BBC article: Rio’s Minister of Justice has started procedures against the organizing company for preventing access to water, amongst other things.

    From a BBC article:

According to firefighters, the “feels like” temperature inside the stadium reached 60C (140F), with complaints from fans to the event organizers for preventing access to water bottles. Cups of water were on sale for R$8 at the venue.

I think blaming it on the high prices for water is missing the forest through the trees. 60C just isn’t a safe temperature for humans. Climate change is the culprit here, the concert planners didn’t adjust to this outlier heat. We’re not ready at all for the damage that is coming.

i don't disagree that climate change plays a huge role here but it's inexcusable to act like that doesn't mean the organizers also played a role in not mitigating the issue and in trying to profit off water at such an event. There can be multiple factors at play but we shouldn't let climate change be used as an excuse for humans' negligent behavior to be ignored.

Although climate change really is a factor, very high temperatures in Brazil, especially Rio, are a well-known occurrence. There should already be laws in place forcing large events to allow the public to enter with water. At the very least, if they do not wish to allow liquid containers (because some people would inevitably arrive with alcoholic beverages the venue sells for a high price), they should provide free water easily accessible at all times and at all locations within the venue. This shouldn't be a problem since water is cheap and these events are not.

A correction: the Minister of Justice in the article (Flávio Dino) is a national position. States have Secretaries of Justice. I'm pretty sure that Flávio Dino is only playing for an audience, it doesn't make much sense for him to be addressing this. That is generally a competency of states or cities.

Several local media reported that water bottles were not allowed inside the Nilton Santos Olympic stadium, even though Rio and most of Brazil have had record-breaking temperatures this week, amid a dangerous and lasting heat wave, and fans were queuing for several hours in the sun.

I honestly can't even believe we've ever permitted venues to prohibit people from bringing water in. It's a callous act that is clearly nothing more than a naked profit grab. Venues restrict water to force people to buy usuriously priced drinks inside the venue. And as some inevitably not be able to afford the markup, it represents nothing less than gambling with human lives for the sake of quick profit over a captive audience. In a just world, venue operators who prohibit drinks, and then have an attendee die of heat exposure should be charged with homicide. You deliberately engineered a situation where lives would be put at risk, all for the sake of easy profit. Prohibiting people to bring in water, such an essential human right, should be treated as negligent homicide.

Even more so because in very large concerts it can take 1 hour just to go from where you are to the queue and back.

The worst part isn't even that they don't allow you to bring water in. I'd even find it at least a modicum more acceptable if you couldn't bring your own, but at least they would sell it in containers that allowed you to stock up for the rest of the show. I mean, don't get me wrong, the prices are outrageous. But if they sold bottles or similar containers instead of open cups, at least you could stock up, secure a spot and stay there. If all you get is open cups, then you have to cycle in and out a few times, losing your spot each time. Ergo people don't do it.

Small update, she postponed her concert tonight presumably at the same venue.
