It’s a bit more abstract and invites interpretation, more akin to Spirited Away than Wind Rises. Personal loved it but I expect to see it near the bottom in a lot of rankings.

In my opinion Miyazaki is retreading too many of the same motifs, aesthetics, and themes. I do not feel like this movie added to his filmography like his earlier works did. I don't regret seeing it but as a fan of many of his older movies it was a bit disappointing.
I liked the movie a lot, but agree with you about the retreading. But I actually liked that point, I think at this stage it’s good to hit those nostalgia notes.

Saw it few weeks back. I thought it had quite a lot of narratives and left the theater quite confused. Maybe that is why I found it just ok. Animation was of course superb (and creepy at times).

Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Howl's Moving Castle, are probably my Miyazaki trifecta, if that contextualizes my criticism in any way.
Was hoping it'd hit deeper and I'd shed a few tears, or somethin'.

I think it's his best looking movie.
Yeah
