Offbeat Fridays – The thread where offbeat headlines become front page news

Tildes is a very serious site, where we discuss very serious matters like alexei navalny, capitalism and kitchen appliances. Tags culled from the highest voted topics from the last seven days, if anyone was nosey.

But one of my favourite tags happens to be offbeat! Taking its original inspiration from Sir Nils Olav III, this thread is looking for any far-fetched offbeat stories lurking in the newspapers. It may not deserve its own post, but it deserves a wider audience!

Legendary Parisian waiter-race returns in time for Olympic Games

Few things are more Parisian than a busy - and sometimes rude - waiter running around with a tray in hand. Be sure to step out of the way, as the infamous Parisian waiter race is returning to the capital in March, for the first time in 13 years.

How very newsworthy: Burglar ran away with potato peeler

    How very newsworthy:

Burglar ran away with potato peeler

It is not known whether it was just the potato peeler the burglar had in mind.

Nevertheless, it was precisely the potato peeler that he took with him from an allotment house in Åbyhøj in Aarhus. [...] He had broken a window with a shovel, after which he went in and stole a potato peeler that was lying on the table. [...] He was therefore arrested and charged with burglary - and the potato peeler was secured for the case.

Blackpool Zoo collecting glittery female elephant poo to determine pregnancy

Blackpool Zoo collecting glittery female elephant poo to determine pregnancy

Blackpool Zoo has been using coloured edible glitter to identify female elephant dung and help determine whether or not they are pregnant.

Tara, Noorjahan and Esha, all female Asian elephants, have consumed food containing a different colour of edible glitter to help zookeepers identify each of their faeces.

The dung is being collected under a recommendation from the European Endangered Species Programme and to help zookeepers keep track of the females’ reproductive cycles, which occur every 13 to 16 weeks, and determine if they are pregnant.
