On April 12, the child suspect allegedly threatened to kill another student on a bus, authorities in Gonzales County say. When he was asked by school officials, authorities say, he admitted that he shot and killed a man two years ago. That confession launched an investigation by the Gonzales County Sheriff's Office.

During his interview with deputies, the boy "described in detail" how he killed 32-year-old Brandon O'Quinn Raspberry in January 2022.

According to investigators, the child's grandfather lived at the same RV Park as Raspberry. On the day of his death, officials say, the 10-year-old retrieved a pistol from the glove box of his grandfather's truck before going to Raspberry's RV and shooting him while he was sleeping.

The child told investigators he didn't know the victim and the attack was unprovoked.

He won't be charged for Raspberry's slaying, however. Officials say that's because of how old he was when he said committed the crime; he shot the victim a week before he turned 8.

Texas State law states that a child cannot be responsible for a crime until they are 10 years old.

I saw this today on the unresolved mysteries subreddit, and was just floored. This child broke into a trailer and murdered a completely random stranger at the age of seven. I've gone down plenty of morbid rabbit holes over the years, including other children committing murders, but this one still managed to catch me totally off-guard.

I know some kids come from bad environments that encourage violent tendencies. I also know some kids are just naturally twisted and cruel no matter how good their parents are. But this still stands out as one of the most "WTF" situations I've seen. Most young children who commit murder seem to do so out of anger and/or take advantage of convenient opportunities to indulge in dark urges and curiosity, or else just don't comprehend the ramifications of their actions. Usually the victims are younger, too. But this one was targeting an adult stranger, and required him going out of his way by sneaking into his house.

It's a genuinely random crime, which are some of the most terrifying of all because there's no motive for victims to predict as a possibility so they can try to protect themselves, or to help investigators find the killer. But a child being responsible is something that police never would have suspected.

Just... Damn. This is bewildering. I wish the best to the authorities involved in figuring out how the hell to handle this kid. He clearly needs serious mental help and they can't leave him free to roam, but I don't know how much their hands are tied from a legal standpoint. It's an exceptional case that just defies basic logic and expectations.

Oof, that's extremely depressing. It's shocking how much this sort of thing (though usually accidental) happens.

    • Parent or caregiver leaves their gun somewhere easily accessible
    • kid is bored and caregiver isn't around
    • kid gets the gun to play with, accidentally (or purposefully in this case) shoots somebody - often times their own sibling

I mean you'd think it'd be common sense- if there are ever going to be children around, keep your guns somewhere they can't get to them.

Kids are curious and don't understand fully understand the dangers of guns if they aren't explicitly tought. It's just asking for a terrible accident.
