It's funny because just recently, somebody posted an NYT opinion piece to Tildes that was heavily arguing for tech companies to be in charge of age validation. And this is the exact thing that most comments warned of - happening only a few weeks later.

Do we need any more evidence that age verification is just a bad idea across the board? I really don’t know what it's going to take for people to start taking the dangers of these laws seriously.

Great prompt! I feel like some people would be pretty surprised by their responses, especially if they didn't fully realize ChatGPT had a user memory.

I don't use it much, so I can specifically remember when it learned each of these things. Not a whole lot that can be used against me with this info, lol

Here’s what I currently remember about you (your “user knowledge memories”):

You love motor racing and video games.

You have a small black and brown beagle girl, about 12 inches tall, who likes to curl up under blankets.

    That’s it — I don’t have any other long-term or hidden memories.

Would you like me to show, edit, or forget any of these?

Given the shenanigans McLaren pulled on him at Monza, I feel like Piastri has the right to be angry about that one. If Lando doesn't bonk him out of the way in T3, Piastri was going to come out ahead. Totally fair racing (barely), but definitely not according to the "Papaya rules."

Either way, I think compliant Piastri we've seen all year is gone for the season.

This is the key. I've only caught a few glimpses of fox "news" over the past few years, but its easy to see how somebody with limited critical thinking skills could get so brainwashed.

It is a constant barage of blatant lies and propaganda that essentially boils down to "everybody else is evil and all of America's problems are because of liberals and immigrants. They want to take away your freedoms and turn America into a 3rd world country. We want to save it, but we need more power and control to do that."

While I understand the frustrations of the author, their proposed solution is extremely short-sighted and comes with a huge list of potential pitfalls that would be extremely damaging to individual freedoms - Frankly, 'server-side' in-depth age verification should not be a requirement for anything.

    1. Almost any age verification can easily be bypassed (I mean, people can get scannable fake IDs for like $40)
    2. We should not trust any company to use or store any validation information responsibly. We already know they abuse and poorly protect personal info as it stands. There's no reason that would change.
    3. It's a huge blow to privacy. For example - say you're an adult and frequent some LQBTQ sites. Now, you need to verify your age, which means there's a written record of you visiting these sites. Given the political climate in the US today, there's a genuine risk that record could harm you if the wrong people get their hands on it.

As a parent myself, this is definitely a huge problem. But there are better ways to solve it. Better device-side parental controls, working on improving parental knowledge (not many parents know you can easily set filters on your home wifi network), strict smartphone bans during school hours, educating your children about the potential dangers of social media, etc.

There will never be a 'one-size-fits-all' solution. As with anything, we just need to stay educated and adaptive.

This is completely baseless speculation - but this is mighty convenient timing for this administration. Something big to distract the news from the Epstein files - that they can conveniently blame on the other political party and use as further "justification" to send the military to Democrat controlled cities.

I haven't seen any specific evidence to suggest this, but we know that these people are capable and willing to toss their own to wolves (or worse) if it means furthering their agenda

Scratch all this. It seems I was confusing Vimeo with DailyMotion.

I realize Vimeo is one of YouTube's only "competitors", but that still seems like a surprisingly high price. I suppose that, as a relatively mature platform, it has the easiest path to growth. But it still feels like an insurmountable task unless there's some regulatory involvement or something equally unlikely to break into YouTube's de-facto monopoly.

We did get a tour of the campus when we visited her and it was pretty neat, but I got the vibe that it loses its charm pretty quickly when you're actually working there.

But if I was Carlos Sainz I’d be really annoyed. Sainz was very competitive with Leclerc but he was fired to make room for Hamilton.

Strongly agree with this. Charles is one of the quickest on the grid and Carlos was right there with him week in and week out, bar the first half of 2023. Hamilton was already slower than Russel and is only going to get slower at his age. It always seemed like a sideways move at best for Ferarri, except they also lost longevity Sainz has over Hamilton.

On the other hand, I'm sure it's been a massive boost for the Ferarri brand. And it's probably keeping Carlos's stock from tanking too much, given his struggles at Williams.

Yeah, if the Ferarri didn't fall apart, I think Charles wins thay race. His pace was really strong early and his top speed advantage would have given him a much better shot at passing Lando for the lead (that and the desperation for a win and knowledge that Lando isnt going to risk a crash).

Not the most exciting race overall, but the strategy kept it interesting. Plus, we're being set up for a fantastic final stretch for the championship battle.

I work in tech, and I cannot get a promotion by doing my job. Instead, I have to get promotions by specifically not doing my job, and instead making pretty pictures about my job and showing those pictures to management.

After spending a few years in big tech, it's absolutely astounding to me that any big tech companies function at all - and it's for this exact reason. Being good at your job is almost a detriment. I think the only thing keeping many of them afloat is that they truly are too big to fail and have strong monopolies over whatever specific niche they fill.

Approaching Infinity | $13.49 | (95% positive) - Found this great game just a few days ago. It's a scifi RPG with rogue-like elements that feels like a mix of FTL and Caves of Qud. It's really easy to get into and, as the title suggests, is a near limitless game. I've had a blast playing this game and would love to see it get more exposure.

Embark on the limitless cosmic adventure that is "Approaching Infinity," a procedurally generated space exploration roguelike with a nostalgic feel and modern sensibilities.

Think "Star Trek the roguelike", or "turn-based Star Control 2".

Upgrade your ship, outfit your officers, and navigate through a dangerous galaxy filled with alien factions, mysterious artifacts, and tactical turn-based battles. Every playthrough is a unique story waiting to be written.

If you're interested, the demo on Steam let's you fully play the game up to sector 7 and continue playing that save if you decide to buy the game.
