Offbeat Fridays – The thread where offbeat headlines become front page news

Tildes is a very serious site, where we discuss very serious matters like alcohol, pavel durov and police raids. Tags culled from the highest voted topics from the last seven days, if anyone was perplexed.

But one of my favourite tags happens to be offbeat! Taking its original inspiration from Sir Nils Olav III, this thread is looking for any far-fetched offbeat stories lurking in the newspapers. It may not deserve its own post, but it deserves a wider audience!

Why badminton has become code for teen sex in Hong Kong

Quick answer: out of touch government handling sex ed, cue citizen ridicule.

Quick background note: the vast majority of schools in HK were founded by Anglican, Buddhist, or Catholic organizations in the last century. A social worker buddy of mine tells me that sex ex is extremely monitored and many entirely reasonable topics are banned in preferences for abstinence only. Some grade 6 programs can only talk about puberty changes such as Adams's Apples or arm pit hair 🙄 In his experience, nothing about condoms can be talks about, nothing about the physical pieces of sexual relations. BUT, nonprofits outside of school exist and are decently well funded, and so social workers try to let kids know in general these place's exist for all kinds of counselling and advice. When the kids visit they can get sex ed, advice, condoms etc that the school wouldn't tell them about.

London bus driver cheers up passers-by firing bubble gun out of window

A bus driver has gone viral for spreading “joy” by spraying bubbles as he drives through east London.

The driver on the 106 service, which travels between Finsbury Park and Whitechapel, was filmed firing a bubble gun as he waited at the traffic lights in Bethnal Green.

Londoners who regularly take the busy 106 route have been sharing their experiences of the cheerful driver as well as reminiscing about times when they spotted him making his way through Hackney and Tower Hamlets.
