The Southern Poverty Law Center has one of the most reliable hate-group tracking databases (the FBI could take some lessons), and they're one of the forces for good remaining in the U.S.

My mother's family is white Hispanic from Puerto Rico, with my mom being a nuyorican; I am constantly thankful I'm white Hispanic with an Anglo name (named after my father, whose family has been in the US since Jamestown). Its frankly amazing the racist and vile shit random people will say to you when they don't think you are a minority. Like, you barely know me, why are you talking about all the "wetbacks" stealing "our jobs" to me? It reminds me of that scene in The Jerk...

I just can't imagine how much worse it is for minorities who look the part now that the racists have been emboldened by Trump's rhetoric.

My family is Jewish, and we come in a variety of shades from extremely pale to Mediterranean/Middle Eastern brown. I'm on the pale, freckled side, my brother is much darker. I've sustained the embarrassment of hearing and correcting someone who referred to him with a string of epithets that started with "towelhead" and went downhill from there. And then, as in your situation, there are all the people who don't know there's a Jew in the room...

What really burns me is the idiots who think they should be able to give insult (or worse) without consequences, while being so thin-skinned themselves that they treat even the politest complaint as a physical assault on their freedom.

Gotta love the irony of calling the police from inside a police station!

The family’s harrowing experience ended only after Stephanie Martinez made a 911 call from a room inside the sheriff’s office where the family was being held
