justin amash, who was already on the fringes of the republican party after breaking with the party line on impeachment, becomes the latest casualty of trump's takeover of the party. this probably guarantees he's going to lose his seat in 2020; he was already facing a contested primary where his main hope of winning was it becoming a clown car (which it has), but now that he's partyless and therefore not standing in the republican primary it means he's going to have to pull the same feat off, but in a general election where he's pissed off most of the republican electorate of his seat and the democrats will presumably have a candidate of their own.

(incidentally, this switch makes him the first independent house representative since bernie sanders left the house in 2007 to take vermont's class 1 senate seat and one of just a few independents to be in the house in recent history)

well, to be honest with you he already kinda fails that test. amash isn't really a "moderate"--he's actually regarded as one of the most conservative members of congress and he was elected as part of the tea party movement--he's just also a libertarian (he runs the libertarian republican liberty caucus in congress), so he has rand paul/ron paul moments and a rand paul/ron paul voting record that makes him look somewhat deceptively moderate.

It has plenty. They just happen to be in the Democratic Party. Just vote for people like Klobuchar or Hickenlooper if that’s what you’re into.

The country needs more principled, non-criminal, moderate conservatives

Amash kinda always fascinated me, since he's kind of the Lawful Lawful policy wonk that all the Tea Partiers would point to for legitimacy. I guess the party of "Eff you, don't tell me what to do"...
