I've started following events in Hong Kong pretty closely as of late, so this and the landslide election results were both awesome to hear. This said, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little miffed by the praising of Trump for this, what with how hesitant he was not too long ago.

Still, this is fantastic news, and it's great to know the US is now more directly supporting Hong Kong.

Hmm, this looks like an indirect threat to maybe raise tariffs on Hong Kong? (For Trump the only thing that's out of character is being indirect about it.) I guess it's something the US can do,...

I guess it's something the US can do, but we shouldn't kid ourselves into thinking we have much influence over what will happen there.

I feel the most important aspect of it is not necessarily the direct assistance it may provide to Hong Kong, but more along the lines that it's a show of support for the protests there. While I'd hope that could help prevent China from escalating things further, it's hard to say; with any luck, other countries would will support as well, but this should already help a lot.

I have trouble deciding whether it's an empty gesture or not. What's an example of how a show of support would help?

My main hope is that the US legislation would indicate to China that the US would strongly frown upon any escalation on their part – e.g. resulting in more trade sanctions – thereby dissuading them from pursuing it. Obviously, US support alone probably won't have a huge impact, but I think that any outside support of the protests is already very helpful; one is infinitely better than none, after all.
