Why is this interesting at all? If there's a debate and he hasn't dropped out, of course he'd participate. There are only two candidates left, you can't even have a debate unless he's part of it.

I think the idea is that he declares himself ready to go out and debate in public, amidst all the COVID-19 dreadful consequences, probably because he believes in the notion of the debate as good...

I don't think that's related, and the last debate already had no in-person audience for that reason.

I think the announcement that he's holding out until at least the debate possibly helps to quell some of the major division within the party. His dropping out (for now) is no longer an open question, so maybe it will calm the debate around it. I'm not sure it will be effective but I can understand the motivation.

I personally believe that if he drops out now there will be less tension within the Democratic party in November, despite liking him best.

Bernie Sanders will participate in the next Democratic presidential debate if one is scheduled for April, a campaign aide said, in the latest sign that the Vermont senator doesn’t plan to drop out of the race.

After a string of primary defeats, Mr. Sanders’s path to the nomination has narrowed significantly. He would need to secure more than 60% of all remaining delegates to be the party’s nominee for the November general election, a task that would mean he would likely have to win every state set to vote by substantial margins.

The Vermont senator has been splitting his time between Washington, D.C., and Burlington, and aides say he is assessing his path forward. When asked how he could overcome former Vice President Joe Biden’s lead, Mr. Sanders has often deflected the question and said he is focused on the coronavirus pandemic.

“If there is a debate in April, he plans to be there,” spokesman Mike Casca said of Mr. Sanders.

I like that they provide an opportunity for progressive policies to receive national media attention, but that's about it.

I think it's really a lack of any better alternatives presented. Also the coronavirus removing the live audience and only having 2 people debating eachother means media outlets can only do so much...
