That's one hell of a purity test.

"You can’t claim to be an environmentalist while supporting the farm industry" or by eating meat or any other animal product, Olesen said.

That's one hell of a purity test.

While true; there's many different expressions for being an environmentalist, and there's many different ways someone can embrace being a vegan or vegetarian—and choosing to eat meat, fish, or cheese doesn't necessarily imply someone "supports the farm industry". I can understand how having someone attempt to gatekeep your views on environmentalism and sustainability because you choose to eat certain products could be considered frustrating or irritating.

That's slightly tangential to where I was going with my comment: I probably only eat meat or fish maybe once or twice a week. Sometimes less, sometimes more. I might have a steak one night and then not touch meat for three weeks. I recognise that it does harm to the planet to eat meat, but damn does it taste good. Some people, who might eat meat every night of the week, might consider such a person to be a de facto vegetarian, despite not adhering to a traditional orthodox interpretation of vegetarianism. When accounting for environmental harm, there's more to veganism/vegetarianism than just "do you consume meat?".

When that person is not eating food, who knows what that person is doing. Maybe they're planting trees, or cleaning up rivers, or voting for candidates of their local Green Party. To co-opt the term environmentalism to require vegetarianism as a prerequisite is as fallacious as saying you can't argue that climate change exists while driving a gasoline or diesel-powered vehicle.

Your tone makes me thoroughly disinterested in providing you with a considered response.

If you see someone being hostile (whether it's to you or someone else), please label their comment as Malice to make sure I see it. I don't read every thread, so Malice labels help by letting me know when there's someone getting overly antagonistic.

Even if it's not always obvious publicly (though I do often remove the comment), there are also other things that happen in the background if someone's being an asshole, including warnings and temporary or permanent bans.

Unfortunately, hostility on the internet is so typical now that a lot of people just seem to think that's how to talk to people, and aren't able to disagree with someone without treating them as an enemy to defeat. Tildes is doing okay most of the time (depending on the subject being discussed), but it definitely helps for people to report the exceptions.

First time I've ever read a comment and immediately gone to search for a way to report it. Not something I took great pleasure in doing, but it is comforting to see the effectiveness of the Malice label in action though.

Especially because no user wants to see quality contributors like @emdash disuaded from engaging with Tildes, I'm pretty sure.

I know that. I don't eat the meat of ruminants on that basis. But to say that if I have milk in my tea or my porridge, or if I have an omelette, I can't be an environmentalist - that's a bit...

I guess this will be one of those fringe parties which regularly collects under one per cent of the votes, I just wonder how their selling point of ending animal husbandry would exactly work in...
