Hello, fellow chronic pain sufferer! I'm sorry to hear this.

As someone who works in medicine my advice would be to send the paper to your pain doctor and ask if they can connect with the researchers about additional opportunities or even their own staff about conducting additional research. It might end up going nowhere, but this kind of feedback can often open doors.

I went through the entire interview process for the study already and they determined I wasn't eligible for the study. I'm meeting with my new chronic pain doctor on the 15th (my insurance changed over) and they're also a researching/teaching institution associated with Stanford, so maybe I'll get to benefit from this research directly sooner rather than later.

I'm also in the process of going through the interview process for a psilocybin study for chronic pain as well at Stanford, so hopefully that one will work out for me.

Hello Chronic Pain sibling! I hope your pain is a 0/10 today.

While it's fair to worry about any forced medical procedures (generally most countries are against this except when it comes to people who break the law) transcranial magnetic stimulation has been around for awhile and while there are many potential applications I haven't seen it forcibly used on anyone yet. Of course this doesn't mean that the CIA other institutions like it haven't already tried to use it in conjunction with torture, but I feel like that's a very different ballgame than judge ordered treatment where the law and human rights matter quite a bit more.

For what it's worth making someone more susceptible to hypnosis in this study consisted of roughly a 10% increase in susceptibility (based on a survey score, the percentage based on brain scans is less interpretable) and that was among the high responders. I would suspect with our long history of forced medical procedures being used for horrific things (chemical sterilization, involuntary admission to mental institutions, shock therapy, etc.) and our history of slowly but repeatedly outlawing these practices over time that it's seemingly unlikely to crop up given current protections and if it does it'll likely get shut down very quickly. Or at least, I really hope so.

In the early days of VR I saw a study where magnets were used to basically "turn off" support muscle groups to make people involuntarily lean their heads to simulate inertia on a virtual roller coaster. It was scary how well high powered magnets to specific regions of the head could have such a drastic physical impact. The studies weren't pursued for that reason, having a programmable commercial device that when worn could severely debilitate you was a massive moral risk, for a physics trick for games especially.
