This is a fascinating report, thanks for posting. It’s really cool to think there is this whole other class of rna organisms that we’ve been heretofore oblivious about. Also interesting that they are active in other organisms in our bodies, perhaps they are even beneficial to the super host organism!
Tangentially, I was just having a conversation with a friend about the limits of human knowledge, whether it was possible to ever really catalogue the entirety of objective reality (broadly defined) of our universe.
That’s hard to determine from here, but one interesting thought he had was that an attempt to understand the whole universe is an attempt to resolve childhood trauma, that to understand would be to enable control, which would provide a sense of safety we never had.
Not sure how much that "broadly defined" is carrying here, but I would think it's not ultimately possible to map the reality of the universe because that amount of information is the same amount...

Not sure how much that "broadly defined" is carrying here, but I would think it's not ultimately possible to map the reality of the universe because that amount of information is the same amount of information that is in the universe, so in a sense it becomes a universe.

Right?! This is completely out of my field, I had no idea there was a zoo of rna lifeforms. Amazing how we keep making new discoveries

Well-written article. It's cool to see Derek Lowe writing about biology now. Used to read his blog that was (is?) more about organic chemistry.
