Sara Taber during the 2024 elections cycle ran as a democrat for Commissioner Of Agriculture in North Carolina.

Taber claims that farmers knew trump was going to start a trade war and voted for him anyway.

Other points she made in the video:

    Why did farmers do that?

First, a lot of farmers remembered that during the last trade war trump started trump gave them "free money" to compensate them.

Farmers also remember trump had farm labor laws change to let farmers get away with treating farm workers poorly. Taber called it defacto slave labor. Keeping farm workers in the country. Threatening their families to get them to work more. Paying them less.

The "Big Beautiful Bill" had many tax breaks which many farmers could take advantage of. Most "small family farmers" at this point in history are millionaires, most poor farmers have been eliminated. Existing farmers have a lot of estate and properties making tax breaks attractive to them.

Farmers also voted for trump so they would be less bound by environmental laws.

Farmers are now getting nervous that the will not get trade war bail out money since it hasn't happened yet and trump doesn't have to worry about their votes anymore.

Yeah, that's a pretty good summary. Farmers despite wanting to appear like "small businesses" end up wanting the most "handouts", as they'd say when talking against various other fiscal policy....

But Trump isn't appealing to anyone now, not even his own party that is clearly going to tank from this.

Virtually all, I would assume. A house on less than a half acre of land costs a quarter million even in relatively low cost of living areas.

Last I checked, the average cost of land suitable for growing crops was around $5K/acre, with the USDA estimating that small family farms are around 230 acres. That puts you over a million dollars worth of land easily.

Of course, a million dollars isn't that much money in the twenty first century. If you're nearing retirement age, own a house and have enough in your 401K, you're absolutely over a million. That's what people would typically think of as "middle class."

All of those soybeans. I wonder if the U.S. is going to have the 2025 version of "government cheese", though this time maybe government TVP.
