Once upon a time, water roared through the Delta flume. This gigantic lagoon in the Waterloopbos at Marknesse in Flevoland served as the test location for the Deltawerken. Now it has been transformed into an imposing memorial to the research once conducted in these woods.

    Waterloopbos
The Waterloopbos contains the scale models of around 30 major waterworks from around the world. The Deltawerken were designed here, as were the ports of Rotterdam, Lagos, IJmuiden, Istanbul and Bangkok. The Waterloopkundig Laboratorium (hydraulics lab) conducted research in the Waterloopbos over many years and simulated reality using water, weirs, dams and wave machines. Discover the hidden treasures of this amazing wood during a walk past the models.

Deltawerk// ode to Dutch engineering technology
In the meantime, the Waterloopbos has lost its original function. In 2016 it was declared a Rijksmonument (national monument). The artists RAAAF | Atelier de Lyon were then asked by Natuurmonumenten (protected sites agency) to create a massive artwork from the famous 'Delta flume'. Deltawerk // became its title. And massive it has become! They sawed enormous concrete panels out of the 250m-long Delta flume that were then turned and placed at different angles. This produces a magical experience of light and dark with glimpses of stunning vistas of the surrounding nature between the gaps.
