It seems like sooner or later China probably cracks the code and starts winning this contest in most summer games. I hope not since the way they go about it seems kind of cheap (emphasizing low prestige events with lots of medals).
Will also note that the Olympics Reddit seemed heavily frequented by pro China bots. It was weird and added to my concern about the future of online discourse.

Having not really tuned in to the summer Olympics this year, I can't say if the US teams and Olympians can pull it off.

It seems China has one real opportunity to win Gold tomorrow and the US has five: weightlifting (the Chinese competitor seems to be the clear favorite), women's volleyball, wrestling, women's basketball, women's omnium. It seems the US would be favored in at least three of those, including the sport in which they have won the last seven golds. I would expect no less than a tie in golds for the US.
Thank you for doing the legwork for me! Truth be told the last time I paid real attention to the Olympics was 2008/2012. I wanted to pay more attention, but alas. Would be nice to see the USA pull...

Would be nice to see the USA pull out the gold lead for this round. We'll see!

Today, the US won Gold in the omnium (indoor cycling event--I don't understand it) and now just needs to win in women's basketball, so it's likely the US and China will share first place because the Chinese woman did win in weightlifting. The US does, of course, have significantly more silvers and bronzes.
It feels like a more extreme version of national service. In that light it's similar to the poverty draft, those most willing to give it a shot are those with the least to lose by doing so.

While watching the Olympics this year, I was wondering why China was so damn good at diving. I found a Reddit post that linked to this article.

Good luck!

Your comments ensured I watched the Women's Basketball gold medal game. That was great!
