    Blows only count if the fighters first point the tip of their saber behind them. That rule prevents the viper-like, tip-first quick forward strikes seen in fencing. Instead, the rule encourages swishier blows that are easier for audiences to see and enjoy, and which are more evocative of the duels in “Star Wars.”

    That's a nice, elegant way to make the fights look and feel more like a choreographed movie sword fight compared to what you might see in fencing or kendo. (Maybe bonus points if you do a spin first?) I hope as the sport grows it can keep its lighthearted nature since too much of a focus on competition might encourage cheesy techniques that don't keep to the spirit of things.
