    I'm totally for putting pressure on oppressive regimes, but I feel like boycotting the Olympics isn't the best way to do it. The athletes who can't go lose a massive opportunity, while the target...

    I'm totally for putting pressure on oppressive regimes, but I feel like boycotting the Olympics isn't the best way to do it. The athletes who can't go lose a massive opportunity, while the target country only gets a relatively minor blow to their prestige.

      I think that's oversimplifying it. It's more than a blow to prestige, there's the lost revenue1 and more importantly brings awareness and encourages others to adopt actions against the oppressive...

      Heading off at the pass the tired argument about reusing olympic spaces, costs from the state, etc. but it comes down to money is spent on businesses in the area that stimulates economic activity and taxes which is a net positive.
