Imgur on the other hand shouldn't even have community features in the first place.

Wasn't Twitter's character limit made with SMS in mind? 140 always seemed oddly specific to me.

These limits create an environment for the type of interactions a platform wish to have. There's nothing wrong with it per se. I have no interest in microblogging, but that's just a personal preference.

For the platforms I love and use, like Reddit and Hacker News, the limits are so big that they're mostly irrelevant. For this type of website, I think hard limits should be only the ones imposed by the technology itself. But, to avoid flooding, larger posts should not be displayed in their entirety at first: a certain amount of characters would be displayed, but you'd have to click on a more button to see the rest. Ultimately, I'd like for Tildes to implement the "hide all child comments" that I use on the Reddit Enhancement Suit. It shows all the top comments, but I have to click to show the children. It's a great way to browse Reddit for a Vimium user like me.

There's a short feature on iPM, a radio programme I listen to, called "your news" where listeners send in a one sentence message of something that happened in their lives. They can be funny, sometimes poignant, sometimes heartbreaking. But the tiny insight into someone's life is fascinating too me.

I'm not sure where exactly in the show it is, usually it's at the beginning or end, so if you're interested, you'll probably have to pick an episode and listen through. They're around 20 mins long.

Personally I really dislike imgur's character limit. Other people are saying that it shouldn't have community features it's for sharing images etc. But I disagree, 1/2

tildes is a largely text based community why can't there be an image based community? And whilst I understand that having a character limit helps keep it a 2/3

image based community, there's so much more than just that. Having basic conversation is really difficult on imgur. And as the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words, but 3/4

sometimes you need 1000 words to discuss the image. I appreciate its existence but its definitely too short for my taste which is why I don't really use imgur anymore. 4/5

I don't use twitter and although it has some of the similar problems as imgur I don't have a problem with it because that's the core of Twitter. 5/5

4chan is a image based community, where you can have basic conversations. But it's also a site I wouldn't recommend to anyone.

The problem with character limits like on Twitter is when the platform reaches for other things. It's a fun creative restriction for witty quips and odd esoteric humor, but now that it's relied upon for news breaking and actual discussion, it's somewhere between annoying and actively harmful.

Not everything should be general-purpose, but ease of use and popularity cause them to explode in other directions anyway. It's kinda sad.

(1/3)Seeing a bunch of lengthy, drawn out, drama filled texts explaining all the newest bullshit hotness with

(2/3) post prefaces explaining how long of a post it's gonna be so you really know how bad things are

(3/3) are kind of pretentious and honestly ruin the gravitas of any serious situation that is being discussed.

Such short form discussion gets tiring after a while and almost enforces low quality content (though I do love the memes)
