Hey, I hope this does not come off as self promotion, but I felt like sharing this older post of mine:
We seem to live in time where community building services are made worse and worse, eventually
collapsing on themselves due to greed.

Who knows if, for example, Discord is next?

So here's a tiny rambly tutorial I wrote about using Matrix for those who have never tried it before.

And please, no fighting over which protocol is "the best" like Matrix vs XMPP vs IRC. We are in the same boat here and all protocols can be made interoperable due to their openness (and already are!), so you can chat with others with the protocol you like. Personally I like all three and believe if they can be made reliably to interop, everyone can have their cake and eat it too.

I hope someone here finds it useful :)

Don't worry about it, even if it is self-promotion it's fine to do that here occasionally: https://docs.tildes.net/policies/code-of-conduct#self-promotion

      Self-promotion

If you have your own site/project/channel/etc. that you'd like to share on Tildes, that's generally fine (in moderation), but it shouldn't be the primary reason that you post on the site. Tildes is a community, not a free advertising platform. Sharing your own content is welcome as long as you're involved in the community, but don't just treat Tildes as a source of an audience.

I'm glad. I like to create a lot of FOSS-y things and write (incoherent) blog posts when I got time, and I enjoy sharing them. And of course when I release my next game I hope to share it here :)

Thank you, this is a very clear post. Most of my communities are still on IRC, but I see more and more Matrix bridges. I've never looked into it since I haven't had a need, but I shouldn't be surprised to see that there's a weechat-matrix plugin. It looks like it's currently in mostly maintenance mode, but feature-complete enough for use.

Also, if you have your own homeserver, or the IRC communities you are in are on libera.chat, you can use bridges to connect to IRC through matrix.

I have my own matrix homeserver so i have my own IRC bridge for that.

Edit: To clarify, matrix.org is bridged with libera.chat, so you can just hop in through that.
