Wow that's a really interesting use of LiDAR. One I haven't thought about before. I have seen mapping out forest covered roads as ofc Radar can't see that using LiDAR, hell even old I think lost Maya(?) towns were uncovered by LiDAR. It has it's up and downside ofc but this is a really clever way of using it. If I were in the developers shoes I would have tought about using Ortophoto to map out the trees because even if the problem arises that you can't see the tree stumps it isn't a problem here because all we need is the top of the trees and help it with the mapping out of shadows. It's more costy but if you get a drone and a lisence to use it I think UAV is really handy to use. Ofc photogrammetry usually needs a stronger computer as it arisen in the developers case but it's still a good one. LiDAR I think holds a lot for the future still, things like this reminds me of how useful it is in mapping. Truly amusing.
