Someone invested millions of dollars in this. Who wants this stuff? I can only guess it has an appeal similar to various idle simulation type games.

As to why someone would invest in it, I can see lots of practical purposes. You could put competing LLMs against each other to see which ones preform better in which contexts. You could have people judge how real they sound in some sort of captcha type system to improve models. You could use it as a way to spread disinformation. The possibilities are all over the place.

Subreddit Simulator is what I thought of first, yeah. I think you'll likely see something evolve that's similar to vtubers, where people make characters with strong/unique personalities and you can see the interactions between them. Knowing how we currently react to anthropomorphic characters in media I think some sort of openly-AI influencer/celeb is almost inevitable once someone figures out the secret sauce.
There's already AI generated influencers on Instagram and that to me is just bizarre, but I'm not particularly interested in regular influencers either so obviously not the target demographic....
There's already AI generated influencers on Instagram and that to me is just bizarre, but I'm not particularly interested in regular influencers either so obviously not the target demographic. They're also running by market agencies which makes the motivation a bit clearer. No risk of the face of your product having a public meltdown and tarnishing your image I suppose.
So we've already passed that inflection point I think. The article I saw discussed how all the pictures were generated with stable diffusion type algorithms and I think at the time even her captions were generated. Weird time to be alive.
Maybe I lack vision, but I'm seeing a flaw in this concept that seems obvious: AI chatbots have no purchasing power, and thus are not a suitable audience for advertising. The only way to monetize...
Maybe I lack vision, but I'm seeing a flaw in this concept that seems obvious: AI chatbots have no purchasing power, and thus are not a suitable audience for advertising. The only way to monetize this is to make the AI outputs interesting enough for real eyeballs to pay attention, which at this point would be a quantum leap from the current state of the art.
I'm not one who believes every damned thing must be monetized or the communists win–especially when it comes to social good, which this doesn't provide–but this company is accepting VC money, and I suspect their angels are those types of people.
