I hope this is good for the consumer, but I can't say that I'm excited for Epic to basically own another small development team.

A grant for someone to continue their good work is nowhere near "basically owning" an organization. It's one of the ways to give another organization money that comes with the lowest likely control, barring unexpectedly punitive levels of grant restriction. Mostly, grants have some basic terms that state the purpose of the grant to keep someone from just paying themselves a large bonus and retiring to a tropical island, but I wouldn't expect Epic to be able to exert much control beyond getting some reports from AltStore regarding the spending of the grant.

They're doing this to stick it to Apple and try to flesh out a third-party competitor to the Apple Store, not to control that launcher. At least, not yet.
