Why would perplexity purchase these two websites only to shut them down? As far as I know it’s a common practice but I don’t follow these sorts of things close enough to know the internal stories.

They're acquiring the company's assets, and don't consider its actual products or revenue streams to be one of them. (Possibly the acquired company is not actually revenue positive, and so shutting down its products improves the financial outlook.) Things Perplexity may be acquiring include:

      • As @rodrigo mentioned, staff—though my experience is that, by the medium term, almost all acquihired employees (certainly the good ones, the ones you most wanted to get) will have departed. Acquisition almost always completely disrupts a company's internal culture.
      • Codebase. It's not clear to me what Read.cv might have in the way of software that Perplexity might want, but to be honest, purchasing a significant codebase is at least 95% impossibly optimistic dreams, so it almost doesn't matter.
      • Customer base. Although in this case, it doesn't seem to me that Read.cv's customers are particularly transferable to any of Perplexity's products.
      • User base. Although again, shutting down the products those users… use… makes this less likely.
